Finding Scholarship Grants
Scholarship grants are available as PELL grants and other federal and non-profit programs. These grants are made available to anyone who meets the guidelines and income requirements.
Most grants are only available to applicants within a certain income bracket. The thought behind this is to make higher education as available for the underprivileged as it is for those who can pay out of pocket.
The government gives away millions of dollars in scholarship grants every year and there are many more grants available through businesses and non-profit organizations. Depending on where you live, you may be eligible for many of these grants at one time.
A great resource for scholarship grants is the United States Department of Education’s website, fafsa.edu.gov. This website is full of current grants available through the government and lets applicants download a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (or FAFSA) form. You can also contact your local financial aid office and they will be happy to help you find grants and scholarships that you may be eligible for.
It is a good idea to start searching for available scholarships no less than twelve months before you are going to begin classes. The application process can be lengthy, so to be eligible for as many scholarships as possible, you will need to get a pretty big head start on the process. Be sure that you have every thing that the applications will call for in one place so that they can be found and copied easily. Many of the scholarship grants will require that the applicant send in copies of important papers such as proof of parent’s yearly income (depending on the applicant’s age), transcripts, essays, letters of recommendation, standardized test scores, and other proof of eligibility that the scholarship board may request. If you keep all of this information in one place, you will not have to waste time looking for them every time an application calls for a copy of a certain paper.
When you begin the application process be sure that you follow the instructions for each grant exactly as stated. Some scholarship grants will ask for different things than others. It is important to read the instructions for each grant before applying. Also, be sure to fill out every line. If something does not apply to you, be sure to state that it does not apply to you. Blank spaces may lead the grant board to believe that the application is incomplete and your application could be denied.
Before sending in your applications for your scholarship grants, be sure to double check everything. Reread the instructions to make double sure that you have done everything the instructions asked you to do. If everything is attached and all lines have been filled out, mail your application to the address that the instructions state.
Once you have filled out an application or two for scholarship grants, you will find that it will become easier and easier.
